During the Advent season, Regensburg shines with a special light. When the afternoon plunges into darkness and the air is filled with the scent of mulled wine and cinnamon, this UNESCO World Heritage city transforms into a true winter dream. At the Regensburg Christmas markets, people gather to experience the magic of the Advent season in the warm glow of the stalls.

New edition

Regensburg Christmas Market, taking place from November 24 to December 23, 2025, is one of the mostbeautiful and most traditional Christmas markets in Germany. Thanks to the combination of honest craftsmanship and culinary specialties, it has gained a name far beyondthe borders of the city. Especially recommended is Heidelberg mulled wine from the Bavarian Forest and apple mulled wine from the orchards of Upper Palatinate.

Anyone looking for inspiration in unique artistic craftsmanship and regional culture will find it at Lucrezia Market at Haidplatz. From November 28 to December 23, 2025, this market will transform into a true artistic center, which will delight with handmade gifts and a diverse cultural program.

For those who long for a particularly romantic Christmas atmosphere, Romantic Christmas Market at Schloss Thurn und Taxis is an absolute must. Thousands of lanterns illuminate the majestic facade of the castle with magical light, while the air is filled with the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds. Visitors here can enjoy a combination of traditional craftsmanship and cultural delicacies, all in a fairy-tale setting.

Another attraction is Advent Market at the Katharinenhospital in Stadtamhof, which, thanks to its location on the banks of the Danube with a view of the Regensburg Cathedral, offers a cozy and family atmosphere. The market invites you to sit by the campfires and taste local specialties.

An extraordinary Christmas experience is also provided by winter Danube cruises. Whether on a festive cruise with the Regensburg Crystal Fleet or a leisurely Sunday brunch on the Barefoot Boat Tila Schweiger – the winter landscape around the Danube offers a unique view of the city and unforgettable moments. The experience Krippenweg invites you from November 29, 2025 to January 6, 2026, to stroll through the festively decorated historic center. In churches, shop windows, and foyers, impressive nativity scenes from Bavaria, Europe, and Africa are displayed, lovingly bringing the birth of Christ into our everyday lives.

Of course, there should also be a Christmas city tour of UNESCO World Heritage City of Regensburg. A special place during the Advent season is occupied by Regensburger Domspatzen, whose Christmas concerts are among the biggest festive highlights in the city’s December program. During this peaceful time, tradition intertwines with modernity in Regensburg. Among the festively illuminated streets, warm hospitality, and a wealth of cultural events, one can truly experience a winter dream in a unique way. A visit to Regensburg thus becomes a journey into a magical world full of lights, tones, and unforgettable moments.

Kulturkick-Regensburg.de – the best to start the year

Regensburg residents say that the city is even more beautiful at the beginning of the year when one international cultural attraction follows another. Every year, the premiere of the immersive light show takes place here, which this year bears the theme “Infinity” before it embarks on a European tour (November 28 – February 1, 2026).

Also, the Regensburg Original, the fantasy theater show Traumfabrik – the Show Theater of Fantasy, is starting its city tour right in Regensburg (December 28 – 31, 2025).

World-class drumming for true connoisseurs is offered by the legendary Drumweek (February 6 – 8, 2026), led by world-renowned Gerwin Eisenhauer and Jojo Mayer with his innovative project ME/MACHINE.

For more than 30 years, the International Short Film Week (March 5 – 15, 2026) has been a meeting place for the European film scene. Every year, the team selects from up to 3,000 short films, of which a tenth is presented to the audience. Those who have not yet experienced it – it’s simply genius.

After the great success in 2024, the international Light Art Festival Re:Light (March 12 – 22, 2026) is also returning, which will illuminate the monuments of Regensburg’s UNESCO World Heritage Old Town with light artistic installations. If the 2024 edition was stunning, the one in 2026 will be, according to the organizer, the Kulturamt, even more magnificent.

European bison from Prague Zoo and Olomouc Zoo have arrived in Azerbaijan. In Shahdag National Park, they will strengthen the local reintroduced population in the wild. Additionally, the original quartet of females has become a quintet – during the wait for transport, which was delayed due to the risk of foot-and-mouth disease, a calf was born to the Prague cow. The transport, organized last week by Tierpark Berlin and the German branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), was the largest of its kind. A total of eighteen animals headed to the foothills of the Greater Caucasus: twelve bison from German, Austrian, Hungarian, and Czech zoos and six from the Rothaargebirge mountains.
