The retrospective of one of the most significant Czech artists of the 20th century is the first comprehensive exhibition of Jiří Trnka in Prague since 1992.
Under the title Trnka – The Story of a Legend, the Villa Pellé Gallery will present a retrospective exhibition of one of the most significant Czech artists of the 20th century from May 21 to August 31, 2025. This will be the first comprehensive exhibition of Jiří Trnka in Prague since 1992. The work of the painter, illustrator, screenwriter, and one of the most prominent authors of Czech animated film, as well as the founder of the legendary studio Bratři v triku, Jiří Trnka, has influenced numerous generations from the post-war period to the present day. His works, including Špalíček, Broučci, The Good Soldier Švejk, Bajaja, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Garden, and many others, continue to inspire and captivate audiences and readers around the world. The interactive multimedia exhibition will offer an extraordinary insight into the life and work of Jiří Trnka. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover both well-known and lesser-known illustrations from books, film and theater puppets, the author's long-ago newspaper anecdotes, polychrome sculptures, paintings in which home and theater became his themes, floral still lifes, portraits of loved ones, and his own self-portraits. The exhibition will be highlighted by several original films and interactive guides, a cinema, and a play area for children. "Jiří Trnka is an icon of the Czech artistic scene of the 20th century, whose work is a kind of family silver that connects generations through its significance. The exhibition is prepared not only for direct witnesses of his work but also for today's children, who may perhaps dive into the magical world of his films, illustrations, and fairy tales for the first time," says Vladana Rýdlová, director of the Villa Pellé Gallery, about the exhibition.
