The exhibition will feature nearly 80 paintings from public and private collections, showcasing a selection of Špála's flowers from the 1920s to the 1940s.
Although floral still lifes represent the largest segment of Václav Špála's (1885–1946) paintings, they have not yet been given a separate exhibition. Previous showcases and scholarly literature have mostly dismissed them as a less interesting segment of the artist's work, without attempting to highlight their specific qualities. The lessons from contemporary art also open up the possibility of re-evaluating those aspects of Špála's floral still lifes that appeared problematic from a modernist perspective. The variation of a single theme, craftsmanship, or temporality are qualities that acquire new attractive meanings in the context of contemporary art.
