From the Taisho period to the end of World War II
Lecture from the series The Story of Japan: History, People, Faith, Art
The first part of this lecture will focus on the dramatic period between 1912 and 1945 – from the brief era of Taisho democracy through the militarization of the 1930s to the devastation during World War II. We will show how society changed and what led Japan to further expansions. The second part of the lecture will take us back to Europe – specifically to the collections of Japanese art and objects that made their way into Czech and European museums at the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. We will explore what was collected, as well as the perceptions of Japan that Europeans of that time created and how Japanese artifacts influenced European art.

There are places that a person cannot invent from a desk. They must develop slowly. Years. Decades. Sometimes even whole centuries. One such place is the Bürgerhaus U Váhy on Nádražní Street in Smíchov. A building that appears unremarkable at first glance hides within it the story of old Smíchov, family traditions, honest cuisine, and hospitality that is not often seen today. U Váhy is not just a place to go for a beer or lunch. It is a house with a memory.
