Bear Trail: Bears return to the Krkonoš Mountains after 300 years

The Tree Top Trail in the Krkonoš Mountains in Janské Lázně is preparing a new visitor attraction called the Bear Trail. The project is being developed in collaboration with the Dvůr Králové Safari Park and the KRNAP Administration, and its aim is to connect the experience of mountain nature with education and respect for wild animals.

New edition

Bears are symbolically returning to the Krkonoš Mountains after more than 300 years. The brown bear was once a natural part of the local landscape, but gradually disappeared from the Czech mountains. The new project commemorates the historical presence of this predator and offers visitors the chance to learn about its life up close, in conditions that meet modern animal care standards.

As part of the Trail area, a natural enclosure is being created, which will be home to two, and later up to four bears. The entire space is designed with an emphasis on animal welfare, safety, and sensitive integration into the environment of the Krkonoš National Park. Collaboration with the Safari Park Dvůr Králové ensures professional background and experience with the breeding of large predators, while the KRNAP Administration oversees the respect for conservation principles.

The Bear Trail will not only be an attraction but also an educational element. Visitors will learn more about bear biology, their natural behavior, the importance of large predators in the ecosystem, and the historical development of their occurrence in Central Europe. The project thus connects experience with education and raises awareness of nature conservation.

The ceremonial opening to the public is planned for April 4, 2026.

The Tree Top Walk is thus expanding its offerings with a new dimension – the Bear Trail, which brings back the symbol of mountain wilderness to the region where it belonged for centuries.

Current information about the project will be gradually published on www.stezkakrkonose.cz

The aviation museum in Kunovice acquired a new aircraft for its collection at the end of March. It is the HM-14 machine nicknamed Pou-du-Ciel, or Heavenly Flea. "It was a kind of predecessor to today's ultralight aircraft. People built Heavenly Fleas at home in the 1930s and 1940s according to a book guide. Anyone with a bit of skill could manage it," says the museum director Martin Hrabec about it.
