Royal game reserve Stromovka: Green oasis of peace

Stromovka, officially known as the Royal Game Reserve, is one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Prague. Located in the city district of Prague 7, near the Vltava River, it represents an oasis of peace and greenery in the heart of the bustling city. This extensive park is a popular place for relaxation, sports activities, and family outings, not only for the residents of Prague but also for tourists.

New edition

The history of Stromovka dates back to the 13th century when it was founded as a royal game reserve for hunting. Originally, it was a hunting ground for Czech kings, especially Přemysl Otakar II, who had the first fenced area built here. Over the centuries, Stromovka underwent several transformations - from a royal hunting ground through baroque gardens to a public park, which it became in the 19th century.

Letohrádek

The history of game reserves on the southern edge of the Royal Game Reserve is commemorated by the Místodržitelský Letohrádek, which was built on the site of the original Gothic castle, of which only a tower with a staircase and a sculpture of a lion with the monogram of King Vladislav Jagiellon have been preserved. Its current appearance was shaped by a Renaissance reconstruction at the end of the 16th century. The wing, inspired by English neo-Gothic style, was added in 1804-1805.

From the terrace of the Letohrádek, there is a beautiful view of the entire park and the northern part of Prague. You will also find stone sundials in the form of a globe from 1698. The building currently houses a study room and archive of journals of the National Museum Library.

Relaxation and Sports

The park itself was also landscaped and improved in the 19th and 20th centuries to serve an increasing number of Prague residents and visitors. Today, it is a protected cultural monument and one of the most sought-after green spaces in Prague.

Restaurants

You will find ponds, watercourses, and picturesque bridges here. In the northern part of the park, there is Šlechtova restaurace, a historic building that has recently been renovated and serves as a popular refreshment spot. You can also stop for something good at Bistro Artyčok or maybe at Vozovna, a restaurant with a children's playground.
