HOREHRON – AN UNDISCOVERED GEM IN THE HEART OF SLOVAKIA

HOREHRON – AN UNDISCOVERED GEM IN THE HEART OF SLOVAKIA

There are places that capture you at first glance. And then there are places that you carry forever in your heart. Horehronie is exactly such a place – a region beneath the majestic peaks of the Low Tatras, where wild nature blends with rich history, traditional hospitality, and unforgettable experiences.

New edition

Summer in Horehronie begins the moment the mountain panoramas, dense forests, and vast meadows unfold before you, creating the backdrop of one of the most beautiful regions of Slovakia. Every day here can look different. In the morning, you can stand on a mountain peak, in the afternoon explore historical monuments, and in the evening observe a starry sky that you can hardly see in the cities anymore.

A stay in nature is one of the biggest attractions of the region. Horehronie is a paradise for cyclists, offering more than 800 kilometers of marked cycling trails. They lead through mountain passes, along mountain streams, blooming meadows, and picturesque villages where time seems to stand still. Families with children, recreational cyclists, and experienced athletes will all find something for themselves. And speaking of bikes, one cannot forget one of the region's most popular attractions – the Horehronie cycling draisines. Riding on special pedal-powered vehicles along the historic railway line combines fun, movement, and unique views of the landscape that you would never know from a car.

If you are still drawn higher, Horehronie will take you straight to the heart of the Low Tatras. The ascent to Ďumbier, the highest peak of the mountain range, is one of those experiences that every tourist will remember. The trail leads through high mountain environments where one fully realizes how magnificent nature can be. Here, another charm of the region is revealed – mountain huts and shelters that are not just places of rest but also part of mountain culture. The hut of General M. R. Štefánik, the Andrejcová shelter, or the shelter under Ďurková are places where tourists from different countries meet at sunset and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the mountains together.

After a day spent in nature, it’s time to discover the stories that have shaped Horehronie over the centuries. One of the biggest novelties of this season is the renovated Coburg Park in Pohorelá Maša. This exceptional place continues the legacy of the Coburg family, which significantly influenced the development of Horehronie and left a mark that is still visible today. The revitalized park offers not only a pleasant place to relax but also the opportunity to learn about the fascinating history of a region that gradually transformed from a mountainous area into an important center of industry, forestry, and ironworks. Coburg Park thus represents not just a new attraction, but a symbol of a return to the values and history on which Horehronie was built.

The majestic Slovenská Ľupča castle, which towers over the Hron Valley, also reminds of the region's history and is surrounded by numerous legends. Iconic places include the Chmarošský viaduct near Telgárt, one of the symbols of Horehronie and also one of the most photographed locations in Slovakia.

After exploring the history and mountain panoramas, it’s time for refreshment. Horehronie has an answer for that too. The Bystrianska Cave offers a pleasant escape from the summer heat and is one of the most significant karst caves. An even greater adventure for the more daring visitors is the Dead Men’s Cave, which leads into a fascinating underground world hidden within the Low Tatras massif. Water lovers can enjoy rafting on the Hron River, one of the most popular rivers for water sports in Slovakia.

It is precisely the diversity of experiences that makes Horehronie an exceptional place. Families with children can board the experience tourist train Drakovláčik and embark on fairy tale stories, mysterious beings, and adventures that will entertain both the small and the large.

As the sun begins to set behind the mountain ridges, the region reveals another face. Horehronie is among the best places for observing the night sky in Central Europe. Thanks to minimal light pollution, thousands of stars and various astronomical phenomena can be admired. Unforgettable experiences include evening rides on the Astrovlak, the Star Train, or night excursions on the Horehronie cycling draisines combined with stargazing.

At a time when most of us lose contact with true darkness, Horehronie offers a luxury that cannot be bought – a real night full of stars.

The highlight of the summer will be the Horehronie Tourist Days on August 8, 2026, combined with the Days of the Municipality of Bystrá. The largest tourist event in the region attracts thousands of visitors every year who come here for music, folklore, regional gastronomy, sports, and an atmosphere that perfectly captures the character of Horehronie – warm, authentic, and hospitable.

Horehronie is not a destination for just one trip. It is a place where every day brings a new story, a new view, and a new experience. A place where you can actively relax, discover history, experience the region with all your senses, and in the evening realize that this is what a real vacation looks like.

The activity is implemented with the financial support of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Slovak Republic.
