THE NATIONAL TECHNICAL MUSEUM

The National Technical Museum in Prague is the largest institution in the Czech Republic dedicated to the history of technology, science, and industry. Located in the Letná district, it offers a modern museum experience with a wide range of permanent exhibitions covering transportation, architecture, astronomy, photography, chemistry, engineering, and everyday technology.

New edition

One of the museum’s highlights is the Transport Hall, which presents the evolution of automobiles, motorcycles, aviation, railways, and water transport. Visitors can admire iconic exhibits such as the NW President, the first automobile produced in the Czech lands, Jan Kašpar’s pioneering aircraft, President Masaryk’s Tatra 80 limousine, and a Supermarine Spitfire flown by Czechoslovak pilots returning home after World War II.

The Architecture, Construction and Design exhibition recreates historic urban environments, including Art Nouveau and Cubist streets and authentic architect studios. The Astronomy exhibition displays rare instruments from the 16th to the 20th centuries and explains how scientists observed and measured the universe.

Technology in the Home explores the development of household appliances from the nineteenth century to the present day, showing how innovation transformed daily life. Photography enthusiasts can visit a reconstructed early twentieth-century studio with original cameras and equipment, while the Interkamera exhibition focuses on the history and technology of photography.

A unique attraction is the Mining and Metallurgy exhibition, featuring a realistic underground mine model and displays illustrating the development of mining and metal production. Other exhibitions focus on chemistry in everyday life, the invention of soft contact lenses by Czech scientist Otto Wichterle, time measurement, sugar and chocolate production, historical printing techniques, and a television studio formerly used by Czech Television.

Combining rare artefacts, interactive displays, and engaging storytelling, the National Technical Museum offers a fascinating journey through the technological achievements that have shaped modern society.
