A neighborhood festival that transforms the streets into a public space full of culture, food, workshops, and car-free community life.
Experience the City Differently is a citywide neighborhood festival that transforms streets, squares, and public spaces into places of gathering, culture, and sharing for one day. Typically traffic-heavy and anonymous areas are turned into vibrant neighborhood centers under the guidance of local communities, associations, entrepreneurs, and residents – without cars, without stress, and with respect for people and public space.
The event takes place annually in September and spans dozens of locations across Prague and other cities in the Czech Republic. Each location has its own specific program depending on who organizes it – it can include concerts, public discussions, readings, workshops, flea markets, sports activities, children's theater, presentations of local businesses, or a shared outdoor lunch. The central coordinator of the event is the AutoMat association, which provides methodological and organizational support to local teams.
The purpose of Experience the City Differently is to show that the city does not have to be just a transport corridor or a place of consumption, but a space for people's everyday lives – with a connection to the place where they live. The theme for the 2025 edition is "The Power of Community," emphasizing the importance of neighborhood relationships, shared responsibility for public space, and involving residents in the life of the city.
The program usually starts in the morning around 10:00 AM and ends in the evening around 10:00 PM. Entrance to all activities is generally free, except for exceptions with limited capacity (e.g., guided tours, theaters, etc.).
Experience the City Differently is not just about fun – it is a way to see the city from a different perspective, meet neighbors, think about who owns the streets, and experience urban space in its full human dimension.
