The excellent Dutch Renaissance engraver Hieronymus Cock (1517/18-1570) became famous not only for the quality of his engravings but also for his managerial talent. Together with his wife Volcxken Diericx (1514/25-1600), he founded a publishing house for graphic prints in Antwerp called Aux Quatre Vents, which became the most significant and productive firm of its kind north of the Alps. Under their leadership, the medieval art workshop transformed into a modern enterprise. Antwerp, with their contribution, became the capital of graphic creation. Cock collaborated with leading Dutch artists, such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and also published engravings in the style of Hieronymus Bosch, based on designs by Hans Vredeman de Vries or Italian masters like Raphael or Bronzino. His production played an extraordinary role in the spread of the Renaissance and Mannerism throughout Europe.
