It was an era of glamour, where extravagant criminals roamed the Riviera and the sparkle of diamonds was ubiquitous. Through a fragmented narrative, where past and present start to blur, John's own demons begin to resurface. The film by the married duo Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani, "The Reflection in the Dead Diamond," is sexy – as well as brutally – a return to the surrealism of the 1960s. It is a direct homage to classic spy films, subjecting the gender politics of the time to a contemporary lens. The locations are as stunning as the action scenes are drastic – full of shattered glass and rusty fishing hooks. With its pompous visual style, brisk editing, and self-reflective moments, this film offers a frenetic spectacle for discerning genre fans. However, beneath the mirror-like surface of the film lies a chilling story.
