Shovel, stirrer, or pajzák. An exhibition at the Academy of Sciences brings closer the disappearing dialects and showcases the wealth and diversity of dialects.
Already Karel Jaromír Erben feared that dialects would not survive the end of the 19th century. It is now 2026, and Moravian cooks are scooping soup with a ladle, in the Tábor region they stir the contents of the pot with a stirrer, and in Eastern Bohemia, they scoop out herbs with a spoon. Nevertheless, dialects are undergoing development, and it is a question of what the future holds for them. The wealth and diversity of regional speech, as well as its gradual disappearance, is represented by the exhibition Critically Endangered Phenomena of Our Dialects. Until mid-June, visitors can view it for free at the Science and Art Gallery of the Czech Academy of Sciences on Národní Street in Prague.
