At Váhy: 300 Years of Prague Stories and Honest Czech Cuisine

In Smíchov, just a few minutes from the center, stands a house that has been welcoming guests for over 310 years. The U Váhy inn is not just another tourist stop in the center – it is a true Prague inn with a family story, honest Czech cuisine, and an atmosphere that makes even a foreigner feel like a regular.

New edition

The history of the house at Nádražní 46/88 dates back to 1713, when it was built as a garden house for the princely family of Schwarzenbergs. More than two centuries later, in 1917, it was purchased by František Pašek, and his grandson Petr, along with his beloved wife Andělkou, fulfill the vision of their ancestors and continue the family tradition. Three generations of one family have transformed the bourgeois house into a place where neighbors, travelers, artists, and all those who enjoy good food and drink meet.

U Váhy spreads over three floors, each with its own character. On the ground floor, there is a classic Czech inn with wooden tables, old photographs on the walls, and a feeling that time slows down here. Upstairs, you will find a quieter lounge for family celebrations, private tastings, or more intimate corporate dinners. And in the basement hides the "Zašívárna U Váhy" – an atmospheric space for evening gatherings, smaller events, and groups wanting to experience Prague a bit differently.

The menu is based on honest Czech cuisine as expected by the locals from an inn – generous portions and distinctive traditional flavors. Classic Czech dishes are derived from proven recipes, adapted to modern times, and are served on period tableware that enhances the overall impression.

What makes U Váhy exceptional is also its own family distillates. The gin FRANTA, named after grandfather František, and the First Republic liqueur ANDĚLKA, named after the current lady of the house, connect the history of the house, the family, and old Prague in every glass. These bottles, as well as vouchers and souvenirs, can be purchased directly at the inn.

Although U Váhy is not located on the main tourist routes, the journey here is simple: just one tram stop from Anděl or a few minutes on foot from Smíchovské nádraží. As a reward, you will find a different face of Prague – one where people still remember your name and where lunch can easily stretch into an evening gathering.

If you are looking for a place with soul, where your memories of Prague will not only be about views of the Castle but also about the aroma of Czech food and the warmth of a family inn, U Váhy is the right stop on your journey.

FOR OLD MOBILE TO ZOO PRAGUE

Prague Zoo has prepared a special event for schoolchildren during the autumn holidays. Every child under 15 who hands in their old mobile phone for recycling at the main entrance will gain entry to the zoo on Friday, January 30, for just one koruna. The mining of rare metals like niobium and tantalum, which are key for mobile phone production, contributes to the deforestation of Central African rainforests. By recycling them, the pressure on local inhabitants – including pangolins, elephants, and gorillas – is reduced. Additionally, the Prague gorillas will have a special program on Friday.
