In 1560, this manor was acquired by the ruling Habsburg dynasty, which established a stud here; on 6 March 1579, Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg made it the imperial court stud. For more than three hundred years, the Kladruby stud provided horses for the imperial and royal courts in Vienna and Prague. The National Stud Kladruby nad Labem is now the only still functioning stud in the world where a special carriage horse was bred for the ceremonial purposes of the royal court. The Kladruber is still used for its original role as a ceremonial horse, especially at the royal court in Denmark and Sweden.
The national stud takes care of the Landscape for Breeding and Training of Ceremonial Carriage Horses at Kladruby nad Labem, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 10 July 2019. In Kladruby nad Labem, you can enjoy a guided tour of the stables, of the carriage house with the Kladruber Horse Exhibit, and of the Chateau. Meet our Kladrubers, the horses of kings and emperors, and explore the journey of a newborn foal which will become a stud mare or a breeding stallion.
The stud in Slatiňany is an integral part of the national stud, and today it is home to a black variation of Kladruber horses. In Slatiňany, our guests are offered a guided tour of the stables, which includes the carriage house and the historic tack room of the Auersperg family.
