„The feast of Saint Wenceslas has long been the most visited day of the Krkonoš year. This year is likely to be no different. The occupancy of accommodations indicates that the extended weekend will bring a large number of visitors to the mountains. But don’t stay at home because of this. How to enjoy an extended weekend in the Krkonoš with children
1. Set off early to save yourself some worries
There are two reasons to get up early for a hike. In autumn, it gets dark earlier, and the shorter day leaves less time for an outing. At the same time, the parking lots at the most popular places fill up quickly during the morning. Those who want to park peacefully should set off before 10 a.m.
2. Less known places offer a different program
The most famous places will be busy during the extended weekend. Therefore, it pays off to choose a route that corresponds to the age and fitness of your children and to look for less known spots as well. For example, Paseky nad Jizerou invites you to walk along the Bird Trail. Hucul Farm offers horseback riding on the slopes of Janova hora. DOTEK in Horní Maršov has a series of programs and crafts for both small and large. Rýchorská bouda offers homemade delicacies and tranquility. 3. A family guide will help
The Krkonoš destination company has been publishing the guide to Fairy-tale Krkonoš for the fifth year. It introduces 44 places that can serve as a basis for half-day and full-day trips. Most of them are open year-round, making them suitable for autumn outings as well. The guide also includes a stamping game – at all locations, children can stamp their brochure. After collecting 3 stamps, they receive their first reward, which can easily be achieved over the weekend.
4. Cable cars will make it easier to reach the start of the route
In addition to the cable car from Vrchlabí to Žalý, all Krkonoš cable cars with summer operation will be in operation during this extended weekend. They will take visitors, for example, to Medvědín, Černá hora, Portášky, or Sněžka. They help overcome the initial ascent, save energy, and plan a trip even with smaller children.
„In conclusion, I would like to add one more important thing – don’t forget that it is already autumn. The weather in the mountains can be different from that in the valleys. Moreover, it is fickle and changes quickly. Fog or wind can significantly cool down the day. Therefore, it is advisable to pack a hat, a neck warmer, and more layers of clothing. They take up little space in the backpack and can be very helpful,“ concludes Šulcová.
