Nearly a hundred original wartime posters and proclamations are presented, along with unique three-dimensional exhibits. In 1940, an iconic poster was created in Great Britain featuring a portrait of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the caption “Czechoslovaks, your hour of liberation will come!” Eighty years ago, on May 8, 1945, these words came true.
Posters from the Second World War are not only historical testimonies, but also fascinating examples of propaganda. The paper poster became a cheap, accessible, and very powerful tool of mass communication. The wartime poster was very closely related to political propaganda from the very beginning. The demonization of the enemy was meant to lead to anger, to a desire for revenge. German wartime propaganda truly mastered the art of distorting reality, presenting clear defeats as tactical victories.
In contrast, the Allied wartime poster was factual, clear, and not exaggerated. Even today, these posters have a strong impact. They are not only a visual imprint of the era but also a psychological tool that, with its suggestive power, managed to influence public opinion. Their rapid dissemination and longevity, longer than radio or newspaper reports, ensured that they became a permanent part of the wartime narrative.
