The Ungelt Theatre celebrated 30 years. The donated chairs will go to the new theater café.

On October 2nd, we toasted to three decades of the existence of the Ungelt Theatre. In 1995, the doors of the then-new chamber theater first opened on Malá Štupartská. The festive evening, recorded by Czech Radio Dvojka as part of the talk show Rozpravy Milana Heina, was marked by looking forward to another thirty years - a new season, new premieres, new actors, and a new theater café await us. Ungelt was also traditionally gifted chairs by prominent personalities.

Guests and congratulations full of emotions

“Our luck holds not only thanks to those who stood with us at the beginning, but also thanks to our audience, who have remained loyal to us for three decades,” said emeritus principal and founder of the theater Milan Hein, who traditionally opened the celebration with his “announcement upwards.” A report on the past season was delivered to Miloš Kopecký and all the “ungelťáci” who are no longer with us (Dvojka, Rande s feministou and Lavička). You could also learn everything about the upcoming premieres (Cizí příběhy; Švýcarsko and Jak starý je Měsíc).

Many actors and several public figures came to congratulate us on our thirtieth anniversary. Among the first congratulators were professors Pavel Pafko and Vladimír Beneš, who highlighted what makes Ungelt Ungelt – the rare unity between the audience and the stage. They were followed by actors Tereza Brodská, Petra Nesvačilová, and David Švehlík. Each of them brought personal and sincere wishes. David Švehlík stated on stage: “Where people are kind to each other, kindness spreads further.”

Traditional dedication of chairs

The traditional ritual of handing over “chairs with a story” was also present. This year, a record 10 new chairs were added, donated by among others Ivana Chýlková and Jan Kraus, Eva and Marek Adamczyk, Bára Poláková, and Štěpán Urban, Vojtěch Dyk, Herbert Slavík, Iva Pazderková, Jan Holík, David Lukeš from the Paraple Center, and others. Each of them – from artistically designed Tonet chairs to the “bobek” with a soul – becomes a permanent part of Ungelt and thus also of the upcoming new theater café.

New theater café in old Prague style

Even at the inception of the theater, Miloš Kopecký and Milan Hein said that a corresponding theater café at street level with all-day service should belong to the cellar stage. After thirty years, it will finally happen! In the same 14th-century building where our theater is located, we are currently reconstructing a cozy space. By the end of the year, it will open to everyone who loves theater, art, quality baking, and specialty coffee. The interior, designed by film architect Jan Vlček, will honor the historical character of the place and combine elements of old Prague cafés with the aesthetics of Ungelt. You will enter the café directly from the street, and through it, you will then get down to the theater. Milan Hein commented on the creation of the café: “This is exactly the kind of meeting place that Miloš Kopecký and I once dreamed of. And now, after thirty years, the dream is becoming a reality.”

Discussions of Milan Hein

The celebration of 30 years of Divadlo Ungelt was captured by Czech Radio Dvojka. The recording of the talk show Discussions of Milan Hein will be broadcast on Sunday, October 26 at 11 a.m., and will later be available online. If you want to read more about the anniversary, we recommend the blog by our artistic director Pavel Ondruch.

We thank all the audience for their support! The operation of Divadlo Ungelt is funded solely by ticket sales and donations.
