Sulawesi, on the other hand, is an island where vibrant animist traditions of indigenous tribes are still maintained – whether it’s the Toraja celebrations or the bloody rituals associated with funerals. Pythons and crocodiles still pose a real danger here, and local markets offer exotic dishes made from snakes, rats, dogs, or bats. Sulawesi is also a paradise for divers – it ranks among the best snorkeling and diving spots in the world. What connects both islands is their location on the so-called Ring of Fire.
