The file was originally published by the Parisian publisher Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts as a practical visual guide for craftsmen, designers, and art students. Mucha shows how motifs from nature and human figures can be stylized into decorative forms usable in architecture, jewelry, furniture, textiles, or graphic design.
„Documents Décoratifs is actually Mucha's artistic credo. He believed that beauty should not belong only to elite galleries but also to the everyday lives of people. This collection shows how art can be transferred into everyday objects, from furniture to jewelry to typography,“ says Sebastian Pawlowski, the museum owner.
The cycle contains 72 lithographic plates that represent a wide range of decorative motifs typical of Mucha's style, including elegant female figures, floral ornaments, stylized lines, and designs for interior design. Some sheets also show the very process of stylization, how realistic drawing from nature transforms into ornament, pattern, or design object. The publication quickly spread across Europe in the early 20th century and became a standard textbook in art schools, for example in France or Russia. It influenced an entire generation of designers and craftsmen and still belongs to the fundamental documents of the Art Nouveau style.
In addition to this unique installation, the museum also presents new historical photographs from the collections of the National Gallery Archive, which bring closer the personal and artistic life of Alphonse Mucha. Part of the museum's modernization is also a new AI digital guide that allows visitors to ask about individual works or Mucha's life directly from their phones. The system is currently available in eight languages, including Japanese, Korean, or Chinese.
The Mucha Museum, located in the historic Kounický Palace on Panská Street in the center of Prague, has been dedicated since 1998 to the life and work of one of the most significant Czech artists of global stature. The collection Documents Décoratifs is now accessible to the public and presents a unique opportunity to see this key collection of Mucha's works in its complete form.
