Up to the water!
Sea? You won't find that here, but water is almost everywhere in the Highlands. In ponds, reservoirs, swimming pools, and even in a glass of lemonade after a hike. We've selected places that come alive in the summer – and where you can hide from the world. The Dalešice Reservoir is one of the most picturesque bodies of water in southeastern Czechia. The excursion boat Horácko sails on its surface, while rocks, ruins, and beautiful nooks for swimming await in the surroundings. In the southern part of the Pelhřimov region lies the pond Stráž – ideal for those who want to unwind. A pebble beach with wooden piers, a paddleboard rental, play elements for children, and the Stáž Bar café. Simply a small summer paradise on the edge of the city. For family swimming with less traffic, head to Velké Meziříčí, where you'll find a pleasant summer swimming pool with a swimming pool, a slide, and a paddling pool for the little ones. Nature lovers will also find refreshment – for example, at the pond Malý Pařezitý in Řásná. Just lay down on a blanket, dip your feet, and slow down.
With kids, it’s easy
The Highlands are a paradise for children. Just hop on (or let yourself be led by a small hand) and set off. One of the most colorful experiences is the castle in Kamenice nad Lipou. Not only will you find a permanent exhibition of historical toys "Find the Toy," but in mid-July the entire area comes alive with the Toy Festival – a large playground under the open sky, workshops, theaters, and wooden toys waiting for both small and large. If you have a little car enthusiast at home, head to the Toy Car Museum in Příseka – four floors of toys, a children's playroom, and a stylish café in a barn make this place an unforgettable trip. Do you have animal lovers at home? Then definitely don't miss the rescue station in Pavlov. Owls, foxes, hedgehogs, and deer have found a new home here, and during the summer, you can enjoy a guided tour and even spend the night at the local eco-center. And if the kids still haven't worn themselves out, try the hike to Bradlo near Telč. At the top, a wooden statue of a devil awaits, along with a legend that can only be read by those who climb all the way up.
Into nature that heals
The Highlands are not just a backdrop for excursions – here you are right in the story. Meadows, rocks, trails, shadows of the forest, and views as a reward. And also silence, which is becoming harder to find these days. Are you pondering a tip for a quiet yet entertaining walk? Explore the surroundings of rivers and head along the Sázava. The section from Sluneční Bay to Stvořidla is ideal for hiking, a romantic outing, or an expedition with children. The water rushes, stones slide, and the stories of the Boys from the Beaver River remind themselves. Nature here is not just for looking at. At the Vír Factory, you can try ferratas, cycling trails, and jumping from a chimney. If you're tempted by less-trodden paths, try the nature trails in the Balinské and Nesměřské valleys – they are suitable for strollers, balance bikes, and people who just want to wander aimlessly.
In the footsteps of towers and ages
Castles and chateaus in the Highlands are not just backdrops from fairy tales. They often hide curiosities, treasures, and completely unexpected stories. Whether you love history, architecture, or just want to relax among old walls, you will find your place here. A surprise awaits you at the castle in Velké Meziříčí, where you will find a blood-stained handkerchief from the Sarajevo assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Yes, that handkerchief. If you are looking for a place where both children and adults can enjoy, head to Polná. The local castle offers several guided tour routes and cultural events in the courtyard. Plus, a view of the pond Peklo? Yes, please. In the west of the Highlands, we recommend the castle in Žirovnice and the reconstructed area in Červená Řečice. And finally, Jihlava – a city with a secret. Here, you will find medieval underground with a glowing corridor, a view from St. James' Church, Gothic walls, and guided tours. And a few steps away, sloths stroll in the zoo. That is also the Highlands.
And what about you?
Just choose a direction and set off for experiences. The Highlands are like a summer treasure map – wherever you step, within a few kilometers, a lookout tower, castle, swimming spot, or a place where children can bury their hands in the dirt awaits you. Discover slowly. And often.
